How do I create a Canvas RUBRIC and add it to an ASSIGNMENT?

Canvas Rubrics

Canvas Rubrics can be created in three places:

from the Rubrics link in the course navigation menu, OR
when attaching a Rubric to an Assignment, OR
when attaching a Rubric to a Discussion.

Creating a Rubric

From Rubrics link in Course Navigation Menu

Step 1: Click on the Rubrics link in the course navigation menu.

Step 2: Click on the Add Rubric button.

Step 3: Give your rubric a Title [1]. Edit the criterion [2]. Determine the point value ratings [3]. You can also change it to a scoring range by checking the box next to Range in the Criteria box [2]. Edit the point value [4]. Add more criterions or outcomes to the rubric [5]. Create the rubric [6].

From an Assignment & Adding a Rubric to an Assignment

Step 1: Navigate to the Canvas Assignment you have created. Click on the Add Rubric button under the assignment.

Step 2: You now have two options: create a new rubric [1] or find a rubric you have already created [2]. Notice, new options are available when creating a rubric [3].

Step 3: In this step, we will find a rubric we have already created. Click on Find a Rubric. Locate the course in which the rubric resides [1], click on the rubric title [2], and click on the Use This Rubric button [3]. The rubric will appear under the assignment.

Step 4: Notice that the point value total originally included when the assignment was created [1] does not match the point value total associated with the rubric [2]. Click on the Edit button [3] to reconcile the difference.

Step 5: After clicking on the edit icon, more options will appear [1]. Select Use this rubric for assignment grading [2]. Click on the Update Rubric button.

Step 6: A pop-up box will appear. You will be informed that the assignment's default total point value and the rubric's point value total do not match. To reconcile them and to ensure that the total point value in the rubric also determines the assignment's total point value, click on the Change button.

Step 7: The total point values will now match.

Step 8: Conversely, you may create a new rubric and add it to the assignment. Instead of clicking on Find a Rubric in Step 3, simply edit the rubric you see before you as was demonstrated when we created a rubric from clicking on Rubrics in the course navigation menu. Once you are finished creating it, click on the Create Rubric button.
