How do I create a CLASSIC QUIZ?
Classic Quizzes
Be default, the Quizzes link in the course navigation menu is disabled (turned off) because publishing quizzes (and assignments and discussions) to the Modules page is encouraged. Adding a quiz to the correct learning unit (module) on the Modules page encourages students to complete the quiz during the process of completing the learning unit.
A Classic Quiz can be created in three pathways:
- From the Quizzes link in the course navigation menu, OR
- from the Assignments page, OR
- From the Modules page.
In this tutorial, we will create the quiz from the Quizzes course navigation link and then publish it to the Modules page.
Creating a Classic Quiz
- In the course navigation menu, click on Quizzes.
- Click on the +Quiz button.
- Choose Classic Quiz and click on the Submit button.
- The Details tab [1] is the default page whereby quiz settings are set. Add questions to the quiz via the Questions tab [2]. Enter a quiz title into the title box [3]. Add instructions into the Quiz Instructions text entry box [4]. Next to Quiz Type, Graded Quiz is the default quiz. However, clicking on the dropdown arrow displays more quiz options such as Practice Quiz, Graded Survey, and Ungraded Survey [5]. For a graded quiz, select Graded Quiz.
- Select the Assignment group [1]. By default, Assignments is selected. You can shuffle answers [2] and add a time limit [3] to the quiz. If Time Limit is selected, enter the number of minutes for the quiz.
- You can allow multiple attempts on the quiz [1], indicate if or when students see their quiz responses and correct answers [2], and show one question at a time [3].
- Do not filter IP addresses. Also, do not require an access code. If Honorlock is connected to a quiz, Honorlock will include an access code that connects Honorlock to the Canvas Quiz. Do not edit or change that access code.
- By default, the quiz is assigned to "Everyone," or all students in the course [1]. Add a due date [2]. Enter availability dates [3]. Students can submit a quiz late, after the due date, unless a corresponding date is entered into the Until box. If you want the quiz to close on the due date, enter the exact same date and time into the Until box. If a student requires a due date different from the class's quiz date, use the +Add button to give that specific student a different quiz date and time.
- Click on the Save button at the bottom of the page. We will add questions to the quiz in a later tutorial. For now, the quiz is saved and unpublished, and we will publish it to the Modules page. Navigate to the Modules page by clicking on the Modules link in the course navigation menu.
- Find the module in which the quiz should be published. Click on the + button.
- Click on the Add dropdown menu [1]. Select Quiz [2].
- Find the quiz in the quiz list and select it [1]. Click on the Add item button [2] to add the quiz to the module.
- The quiz will be published to the module.
In the next tutorial, we will look at different quiz question types and add questions to the quiz.
